Buying Guide: How to Choose a Wall-Mounted Changing Table for Public Restrooms

A wall-mounted changing table is a space-saving solution for creating a changing area in restaurants, hotels, shopping malls, airports, stations, hospitality facilities, and other restrooms open to the public. Folding models remain closed against the wall when not in use and open only when changing. To choose the right product, you need to consider orientation, open and closed dimensions, declared load capacity, material, opening system, safety belt, and characteristics of the wall on which it is installed.

Horizontal or Vertical Wall-Mounted Changing Table?

A horizontal changing table provides the changing surface primarily in width and generally protrudes less toward the center of the room when open. A Holity model, for example, measures approximately 89.5 cm wide and 48.9 cm deep.

A vertical changing table, on the other hand, takes up less linear space on the wall but requires greater front depth when in use. The range includes vertical models with open depths of around 86-89 cm.

Before purchasing, measure both the available wall and the space required in front of the open changing table, considering doors, sanitary fixtures and passages.

How much space does it take up when closed?

One of the main advantages of the wall-mounted folding changing table is the reduced space it takes up when not in use. Some Holity HDPE models have a depth of around 8.5-10.2 cm when closed, while versions in wood or HPL can exceed 20 cm.

The definition of “space-saving” alone is therefore not sufficient: always compare the closed depth and the open depth in the technical data sheet.

HDPE, ABS, polypropylene, wood or metal?

The category includes changing tables in HDPE, ABS, polypropylene, multiplex wood with HPL and configurations that use stainless steel or aluminium. The choice depends on the frequency of use, the environment and the expected cleaning procedures.

Plastic materials allow for shaped surfaces and relatively lightweight products. Wood and HPL are also used when a finish closer to the room's furnishings is sought, while metal versions are mainly present in more robust professional configurations.

Do not assume that a material is compatible with every detergent or disinfectant: follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Belt, edges and controlled opening

Many professional changing tables have an adjustable belt and a shaped surface with side edges. Various models also use pistons, springs or other systems that control the movement of the table during opening and closing.

These features vary from product to product. The presence of the belt does not replace adult supervision and the child must not be left unattended on the changing table.

Maximum load capacity: check the individual model

The load capacity is not the same for all wall-mounted changing tables. The Holity range includes models suitable for children up to approximately 11 kg, products with a load capacity of 15 kg and professional changing tables tested for significantly higher loads.

A high structural load does not mean that the product is intended for children of any weight or age. For use, the intended use, limits and instructions declared by the manufacturer must be respected.

Microban and antibacterial treatments

Some specific Holity changing tables use Microban technology or other antibacterial treatments incorporated into the material. However, this is not a common feature across the entire category.

An antimicrobial treatment does not replace cleaning the surface between uses. Frequency, cleaning product and maintenance methods must be defined based on the changing table instructions and the facility's procedures.

Wall-mounted changing table installation

Safety also depends on the fixing. The wall, anchoring system and mounting height must be compatible with the weight of the product, the expected load and the manufacturer's instructions.

There is no single anchor or universal measurement valid for all changing tables. On plasterboard or lightweight walls, a suitably designed reinforcement structure may be necessary; on masonry, fixings must be chosen based on the actual support.

Before assembly, also check the space required for complete opening and the absence of interference with doors, sanitary fixtures and other accessories.

EN 12221: what to check

UNI EN 12221:2026 has been in force since 2026, relating to the safety requirements and test methods for changing tables and changing mats for domestic use. The new edition replaces the previous parts 1 and 2.

In the Holity catalogue, some products declare conformity to previous versions of EN 12221 or report additional certifications. For professional supplies or specifications, it is therefore necessary to check the updated documentation for the specific product code without automatically attributing the same certification to the entire category.

How to choose a wall-mounted changing table

  1. Measure the width of the wall and the available depth in front of the product.
  2. Choose between horizontal and vertical opening based on the geometry of the bathroom.
  3. Compare the overall dimensions both when closed and open.
  4. Check the load capacity and usage limits declared by the manufacturer.
  5. Check the belt, edges and opening and closing system.
  6. Evaluate the material and cleaning methods envisaged.
  7. Check the wall, fixings and installation instructions.
  8. For tenders or professional supplies, check the certifications and documentation of the chosen model.

Wall-mounted changing tables for hotels, restaurants and public places

For high-traffic structures, it may be useful to favour easy-to-clean models, with controlled opening and small overall dimensions. In hotels, restaurants and structures where aesthetic integration is also important, wood, HPL or metal finishes may be considered instead.

Explore Holity wall-mounted changing tables and compare configuration, dimensions, material, load capacity, opening system and available accessories.

Frequently asked questions about wall-mounted changing tables

Is a horizontal or vertical changing table better?

The horizontal one requires greater width on the wall but generally less front depth. The vertical one takes up less width, but can protrude further into the room when open.

How much does a changing table protrude when closed?

It depends on the model. Some plastic versions go down to around 8-10 cm, while configurations in wood, HPL or metal can have greater depths.

What is the correct load capacity?

There is no universal load capacity. You must use the limit and intended use declared for the specific changing table.

Can a changing table be mounted on plasterboard?

It depends on the wall structure and the reinforcement system. It should not be simply fixed to the sheet without checking the capacity of the support and installation instructions.

Do all changing tables have Microban technology?

No. Microban and other antibacterial treatments are only available on certain models and do not replace normal cleaning procedures.

Do all Holity changing tables comply with the same version of EN 12221?

No. The data sheets may show different versions or certifications. When compliance is a purchase requirement, it is necessary to check the updated documentation for the specific item.
