Buying Guide: How to Choose a Ball Pit for Nurseries, Playrooms, and Recreational Spaces

The ball pit, or children's ball pit, is a play structure used in nurseries, kindergartens, playrooms, recreational centers, and play areas. The Holity catalog includes models with different shapes, sizes, and materials: from compact, foldable tubs to larger modular structures, right up to interactive versions with lights. To choose correctly, you need to evaluate available space, edge height, material, ease of cleaning, number of balls, and the safety features declared for the individual product.

1. Motor play and sensory activities

A ball pit creates a delimited space in which children can move, grab and move the balls, change position, and interact with others. It can therefore be used for play, motor, coordination, and sensory exploration activities.

  • Movement: entering, sitting, moving and retrieving the balls involve different motor actions.
  • Sensory stimulation: colours, shapes and contact with numerous spheres offer different tactile and visual stimuli.
  • Shared play: in the models sized for multiple users the pool can be included in group activities under adequate supervision.

Some structures can also be used in psychomotor projects or multisensory activities. Any therapeutic use must however be defined by competent professionals and does not automatically derive from the presence of the ball pool.

2. Shapes and materials: square, round or modular

The shape must be chosen above all based on the available space. The Holity catalogue includes numerous square or rectangular models and various round pools, as well as corner and modular configurations.

Square or rectangular pool

It is easy to fit along a wall or inside an already organised play area. The available sizes vary significantly, from compact structures up to 200x200 cm, 200x250 cm or 300x200 cm pools.

Round pool

The circular shape eliminates the external corners of the structure and can be useful when the pool is placed in a central area. The catalogue includes, for example, models with diameters of 150, 160 and 200 cm.

Structure materials

Not all pools are built the same way. Some models use high-density foam covered in PVC-coated polyester, others use expanded polyurethane with super-washable technical fabric; there is also a modular pool in rigid polypropylene. Properties such as antibacterial treatment, absence of phthalates, resistance to bites or fire behaviour must be verified on the individual product.

3. Balls: quantity, equipment and cleaning

Before purchasing, it is important to check whether the balls are included, optional or not included. The equipment varies between models: some Holity tubs are sold with a specific number of balls, while optional sets are available for others.

There is no universal formula such as “500 balls per square metre”: the required number depends on the internal dimensions, filling height and diameter of the balls. It is preferable to use the quantity indicated by the manufacturer. For example, for some Holity models around 1,000 balls are recommended, while a 200x200 cm tub with 65 cm sides is offered complete with 3,000 balls.

For cleaning, it is necessary to follow the instructions for the individual product. Some coverings can be washed with a damp cloth and, where expressly stated, can also be sanitized with alcohol-based products. The balls must also be subjected to periodic maintenance consistent with the level of use of the structure.

4. Dimensions and purchase planning

The pools in the catalogue have very different sizes: there are low and compact models, structures with sides of approximately 30-45 cm and higher modular pools. It is not correct to automatically associate a certain height with an age range without considering the manufacturer's instructions.

Before purchasing, check external and internal dimensions, height and thickness of the walls, space required for access and supervision and the number of children allowed in the product instructions. In modular models, also consider the connection system between the modules and the space required for assembly and disassembly.

The price depends on size, materials, structure, supply of balls and any additional features. The category includes both basic pools and interactive models with light elements; it is therefore preferable to compare the actual features rather than using rigid price ranges.

5. Safety and features to be verified

Standards and certifications must be evaluated according to the type of product and its intended use. It is not correct to state that every ball pool must be simultaneously certified to EN 1176 and EN 71.

  • EN 1176: concerns equipment and surfaces for play areas. EN 1176-10 contains specific requirements for fully enclosed play equipment and also includes ball pools.
  • EN 71: concerns the safety of toys; its scope excludes playground equipment intended for public use.
  • Reaction to fire: some Holity models declare a Class 1 fireproof coating, but this feature must not be automatically extended to the entire category.

Before installing the pool in a school, playroom or other facility open to the public, therefore, check the technical documentation, intended use, materials and requirements applicable to the specific project.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What size ball pit should I choose?
It depends on the space available and the model. Measure the external dimensions and also consider the area needed for access, supervision, cleaning and passage around the structure.

How many balls do I need?
There is no standard number per square meter. Use the quantity recommended by the manufacturer based on the internal dimensions and the expected fill level.

Are balls always included?
No. Some models include balls, others offer them as an optional and still others only indicate the recommended quantity. The equipment must be checked in the product sheet.

How do I clean a ball pit?
The liner and balls must be cleaned periodically following the manufacturer's instructions. Do not automatically use alcohol, steam or aggressive detergents if compatibility with the material is not expressly indicated.

Does a ball pit need to be EN 71 certified?
Not necessarily. The applicable standard depends on the classification and intended use of the product. Play equipment intended for public use falls under a different framework than toys for private use.

What features should you check before purchasing?
Check the dimensions, material, height and thickness of the walls, assembly system, balls included or optional, cleaning methods and any certifications or safety features declared for the chosen model.
