Among the small noises that can disturb a restful stay in a room is the hum of the minibar, especially when the compressor kicks in during the night. For those managing a hospitality business, choosing a quiet minibar isn't just a technical detail for professionals, but a choice that can impact the quality of the stay as perceived by guests and, consequently, their reviews.
In this guide, we'll look simply and practically at the options available on the market and how to choose one based on the characteristics of your property.
There are three main families of minibars on the market, and the main difference between them lies in the way they produce cold:
None of the three solutions is absolutely "wrong": the right choice depends on where the minibar will be installed, the climate of the area where the property is located, and how strict your standards for silence in your room are.
These models are specifically designed for bedrooms, where even the slightest background noise can disturb your sleep. They don't have a compressor or other moving parts: the cold is generated by using the heat produced by an electrical resistor, much like an old gas-fired camping refrigerator. The result is that there's practically nothing to hear, even at night when the room is completely silent.
The downside : being less energy efficient, these minibars consume slightly more energy than other systems and cool more slowly. They also need to be installed in a space with minimal ventilation, otherwise they risk overheating and consuming even more energy.
When to choose them : standard, double, twin rooms — wherever night-time comfort is the top priority and the property is not located in an area with a very hot climate.
They work with a small electronic plate that cools without the need for gas or a real motor. Again, they are almost completely silent: if the model doesn't have an internal fan, operation remains imperceptible, while models with a small fan to aid heat exchange produce a very faint hum, comparable to the hiss of a laptop.
The downside : they're the best solution for rooms with already controlled (air-conditioned) temperatures; in very hot environments, they struggle a little more to maintain the cold.
When to choose them : B&Bs, small rooms, facilities that want to focus on low consumption and long-lasting components.
They work like a standard refrigerator, with a compressor that cycles on and off. They're the most efficient choice for cooling quickly and are well-suited to hot environments or enclosed spaces without much ventilation. When running, the compressor produces a light but noticeable background noise—similar to that of an air conditioner running on silent mode.
To address the problem of nighttime noise, many professional hotel models integrate a timer that turns off the motor during the rest hours set by the manager, while still maintaining the accumulated cold: in this way, precisely during the hours when silence matters most, the minibar remains silent.
When to choose them : structures in areas with a warm climate, superior rooms or suites where rapid and reliable cooling is required, executive offices.
To choose the most suitable silent minibar for your room, therefore, it's not enough to look at the technology used. The right question to ask is: under what conditions will this minibar be used?
